Teddy Cruz, Roberto Tejada, and Yvonne Venegas: Making Art in Tijuana

Making Art in Tijuana

Friday, March 9, 2007 | 7:00 pm | Free Admission

Santa Monica Museum of Art | Bergamot Station G1 | 2525 Michigan Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90404

For some, the idea of "art" and "Tijuana" stops with a Velvet Elvis. For others, the city is a new hub of postmodernism. What is the real story of Tijuana's artistic tradition? What does it mean to make art in the US-Mexico border's biggest metropolis? UCSD art historian Roberto Tejada will lead a discussion with three innovative thinkers who relate to Tijuana and the border in very different ways: photographer Yvonne Venegas, architect and theorist Teddy Cruz, and Heriberto Yepez, author of Here is Tijuana!, poet, and professor of philosophy at the Autonomous University of Baja, California.

Alternative Universes, a Panel on Emerging Artist Spaces

Student Project

UCSD Visual Arts Department presents

Alternative Universes,

a panel on emerging artist spaces.

Friday, March 3rd, 7:30 pm at Estación Tijuana. Tijuana, Mexico

With support from the UCSD Visual Arts Department, four innovative and independent art spaces have been invited to discuss their work and their practice on March 3rd in a panel entitled “Alternate Universes.” Each of these alternative universes treats the white cube space in different ways, engaging their communities and mapping themselves in their urban setting while pointing to the educational institutions and relationships from which many are formed. Some act as wedges in the cultural matrix, some fill the gaps while others behave more parasitically on the city and its institutions. “Alternative Universes” will also provide a forum to discuss the ways artists and curators are working together to reinvigorate the counter-tradition of the alternative art space. We also hope to address how spaces developed on the edges or in the barrios of major cosmopolitan spaces are specifically addressing issues such as marginalization, gentrification, and cultural tourism.
